Yellow fever

Vaccination is recommended for travellers to many areas, including much of the interior and increasingly some coastal regions. A certificate may be required for onward travel to certain other countries, so keep it safe.

A vast country with mixed risks

Brazil is enormous, and a trip to Rio de Janeiro or São Paulo looks very different from one into the Amazon or the Pantanal wetlands. For most itineraries we recommend hepatitis A and typhoid cover and a check on tetanus, diphtheria and polio. Hepatitis B and rabies are worth considering for longer stays, rural travel or close animal contact, particularly deep in the interior where medical help is further away.

Yellow fever and malaria

Yellow fever is one of the most important considerations for Brazil. Vaccination is recommended for travel to large parts of the country, including much of the interior, and the areas where it is advised have been expanding in recent years to take in some coastal regions too. The vaccine needs to be given at least ten days before travel to be effective, and your certificate may also be requested if you go on to another country afterwards, so do not leave this late. Malaria is largely an Amazon-basin concern; if your plans include that region, antimalarial tablets and careful bite avoidance are usually advised, whereas the main coastal cities and the Iguaçu Falls are low risk.
