Malaria

Malaria risk is present across much of the country, varying by region and season; antimalarial tablets are often advised depending on where you are travelling, the time of year and your itinerary. We will assess this individually.

Yellow fever

No yellow fever risk in India itself, but proof of vaccination is required if you are arriving from a country with risk of yellow fever transmission.

Travelling to India

India is one of the most rewarding destinations in the world, but the sheer variety of climates, landscapes and conditions means travel health advice rarely fits a single template. A trip through the Golden Triangle differs greatly from trekking in the Himalayas, a beach holiday in Goa or volunteering in a rural village. The most common problems travellers face are stomach upsets linked to contaminated food and water, so vaccines such as Hepatitis A and Typhoid are routinely recommended alongside sensible eating and drinking habits.

Rabies deserves serious thought because stray dogs and monkeys are common, and reliable post-exposure treatment can be hard to reach quickly in remote areas. If you are staying for longer, working with animals or travelling well off the beaten track, a pre-travel rabies course can buy valuable time should an incident occur.

Regional and seasonal notes

Risks shift across the country and the calendar. Mosquito-borne illnesses including dengue and Japanese encephalitis tend to peak during and after the monsoon, particularly in rural and agricultural regions. Malaria precautions depend heavily on your exact route, so a rural trek in the north-east is a very different picture from a city-only itinerary. Altitude is a further consideration for anyone heading into mountainous areas such as Ladakh or the foothills of the Himalayas, where ascent should be planned gradually.

Whatever your plans, bite-avoidance measures, careful food and water hygiene, and a well-stocked travel kit are as important as any vaccine.

Book your consultation in good time

Some courses, such as rabies and Hepatitis B, are given over several weeks, so it helps to come and see us early. We recommend booking a travel consultation at Crewe Pharmacy at least six to eight weeks before you fly. We will review your itinerary, vaccination history and health needs, then build a tailored plan. To arrange your appointment, call 01270 215837 or pop into the pharmacy on Nantwich Road.
