Malaria

Risk is present throughout the year in nearly all areas below 1,800m, including the northern safari circuit and Zanzibar. The summit zone of Kilimanjaro is too high for transmission. Antimalarial tablets are usually advised.

Yellow fever

A certificate is required for travellers arriving from a country with risk of yellow fever, which can include those transiting Kenya. Check your full route, as Zanzibar enforces this strictly.

A country of very different trips

Tanzania might mean a wildlife safari across the Serengeti and Ngorongoro, an ascent of Kilimanjaro, or a quiet week on Zanzibar’s beaches, and each comes with its own profile. For the vast majority of travellers we recommend protection against hepatitis A and typhoid and a check that tetanus, diphtheria and polio cover is up to date. Trekkers, longer-stay visitors and anyone heading well off the beaten track may also want to consider hepatitis B and rabies, since access to reliable medical care can be limited once you leave the main towns.

Malaria, altitude and yellow fever

Malaria is a year-round risk across most of mainland Tanzania and on Zanzibar, with the main exception being high ground such as the upper slopes of Kilimanjaro. Antimalarial tablets are normally advised, supported by good bite prevention with repellent, covering clothing in the evenings and a treated mosquito net. The yellow fever picture depends heavily on your route: although Tanzania is not in the main risk zone, a certificate is required if you arrive from or transit a country where yellow fever occurs, and Zanzibar in particular checks this on entry, so flag your full itinerary when you visit us.

Give yourself enough time

Because some vaccines are given as a short course and malaria tablets need to begin before you travel, the ideal window to start is six to eight weeks ahead. If your departure is sooner than that, it is still worth coming in, as we can usually prioritise the most important protection.
