Malaria

Malaria risk is low in the main tourist destinations and absent from major cities and the Red River and Mekong deltas, but it exists in some rural, forested and highland areas; antimalarials are considered only for certain itineraries.

Yellow fever

No yellow fever requirement for entry, except for travellers arriving from a country with a risk of yellow fever transmission.

Travelling to Vietnam

Vietnam stretches a long way from north to south, taking in the mountains around Sapa, the bustle of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, the coastline, and the waterways of the Mekong Delta. This range of environments means a single piece of advice rarely covers a whole trip. As elsewhere in the region, food- and water-borne infections are the most common issue, so Hepatitis A and Typhoid vaccines are typically advised for most travellers.

Rabies circulates in Vietnam, and the risk comes mainly from dogs. If you are travelling for a longer period, heading into rural or remote areas, or cycling and riding motorbikes, it is worth talking through whether a pre-travel rabies course is sensible for you.

Regional and seasonal notes

Dengue fever is common, particularly in urban and lowland areas and during the wetter months, so protecting yourself from daytime mosquito bites is important. Japanese encephalitis is associated with rural rice-growing regions and is more relevant for longer or repeated rural stays. Malaria is not a concern in the major cities or the main delta regions, but isolated rural and forested pockets do carry risk, so your specific route determines whether antimalarial tablets are appropriate.

Combining vaccination with reliable insect repellent, careful eating and drinking, and basic road-safety awareness gives you the best protection.
